UPSC Engineering Services Examination 2018

The UPSC Engineering Services Examination, 2018 is for entry into the various central Government Services conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) every year in the month of June for recruitment to the four categories of Engineering Services.

UPSC Engineering Services Examination 2018 Eligibility Criteria

There are various eligibility criteria that the candidates are required to fulfill to apply UPSC Engineering Services Exam 2018.
These eligibility criteria include:

Age:

The candidates should be minimum of 21 - 30 years as on 1st August of the year that the student sits for the examination. However, there is age relaxation up to 35 years for candidates belonging to certain categories including departmental candidates as per the UPSC's notice.

Educational Qualifications:

The candidates must have the following educational qualifications to apply for UPSC Engineering Services Exam 2018:
(a) A engineering degree from a University that is incorporated by an Act of the State or Central Legislature in India or other Educational Institutions established by an Act of Parliament or deemed Universities under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956;
or
(b) Passed Section A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India);
or
(c) If the candidate has a diploma or a degree in Engineering from a foreign Institution/ College/ University under certain conditions that the Indian government has recognised,
or
(d) If he/she has cleared the Examination of Graduate Membership of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India);
or
(e) If he/she has cleared the Examination of Associate Membership Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India;
or
(f) If he/she has cleared the Examination of Graduate Membership of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November, 1959.

N.B.: If he/she is a candidate for the Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engineering Posts), then they are required to fulfill the above qualification or the following qualification:

M.Sc. or its equivalent degree with Wireless Communication, Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject.

All candidates who are in their final year of Engineering degree or its equivalent exam are also eligible to compete for UPSC Engineering Services Exam 2016, however such candidates will have to submit their proof of passing the engineering examination, after the clearing the written exam.

Nationality:

The candidates applying for  UPSC Engineering Services Exam 2016 must be either:
(a) a citizen of India, or
(b) a subject of Bhutan, or
(c) a subject of Nepal, or
(d) a Tibetan refugee who has come to India before January 1st, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
(e) if he/she is a person of Indian origin and has migrated from Vietnam, Zaire and Ethiopia, Malawi, Zambia, the United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda, East African countries of Kenya, Sri Lanka, Burma or from Pakistan, with the motive to permanently settling down in India.

All candidates those who belong to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) mentioned above would require a certificate of eligibility that shall be issued by the Government of India. Thus the appointment letter to those candidates will only be given after the Government of India issues the necessary eligibility certificate.

Physical standards:

The physical condition of every candidates are tested before giving the final appointment and they must be physically fit according to physical standards for admission to Engineering Services Examination, as given in Appendix II of the rules for the exam that would be published in the Gazette of India released on 27th September 2017.


UPSC Engineering Services Examination 2018 Exam Pattern

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Engineering Services Examination for appointment of Engineers to its various posts. The exam pattern of the UPSC Engineering Services Examination 2018 is as follows:-
Part 1 - The first part of the exam is a written examination that consists of two sections
  • Section I: objective types questions
  • Section II: conventional papers.
These two sections cover syllabus from the following Engineering discipline
  • Civil Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering and
  • Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering
The section I (objective paper) of every candidate will be evaluated first. And then those students who qualify section I, only their section II (conventional paper) will be evaluated. Both the question papers would be in English and the therefore, the conventional paper must be answered in English. There will also be negative marking for every wrong answer in section I (objective paper).

Part 2 – The part of the Engineering Services Examination consists of interview and personality test for those candidates who have qualified Part 1 or the written test. The test is for 200 marks and the student’s integrity of character, powers of practical application, mental and physical energy, tact and other social qualities, initiative and intellectual curiosity and the capacity for leadership are all tested.

N.B: The UPSC has all the rights to fix the qualify marks for any section(s) or even change the marks of any section. The questions papers are in English the Commission have discretion to fix minimum qualifying marks in any or all the papers of the examination.


UPSC Engineering Services Examination 2018 Application Process and Exam centers

The candidates are required to fill up online application form only through online mode by using the official website www.upsconline.nic.in.
Candidates (excepting Female/SC/ST/ PH who are exempted from payment of fee) have to pay an exam fee of Rs. 200  either by:
SBI Net Banking/ State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur Netbanking/ State Bank of Mysore Netbanking/ State Bank of Patiala/ State Bank of Travancore Netbanking
or
Depositing the cash in any SBI branch
or
by doing online payment using Visa/ Master debit or credit card

The candidates belonging to the scheduled tribes, scheduled castes, physically handicapped categories and also the female candidates are exempted from paying the UPSC Engineering Services Examination fees.

UPSC will inform the candidates whose applications are accepted or rejected for the exam, and also about the time table and place of the exam.
