Joint Entrance Examination (Main) - JEE Main 2018

The Joint Entrance Examination - JEE Main, previously known as All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) is one of the most important entrance test for all engineering aspirants who wish to take admissions in various undergraduate programmes (Bachelor of Engineering - B.E. and Bachelor of Technology - B.Tech.) of engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and many other engineering institutions across India that are centrally funded CFTIs. The Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Apex Board, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducts the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) - JEE Main.

Clearing JEE Main also makes them eligible to sit for the JEE advanced which is the entrance exam to secure admissions in all the IITs and the Indian School of Mines (ISM). The candidates who are the top 1,50,000 score holders in the JEE Main are the ones who are eligible to apply for the JEE Advanced level exam. No weightage will be given to marks scored in class 12th board exam for calculating All India Rank (AIR) in JEE Main 2018.

JEE (Main) 2018 Mode of Exam

The Paper 1 of the JEE Main exam consists of B. E./B.Tech courses and is conducted in both online mode (computer-based examination) and offline (pen and paper-based examination) mode whereas Paper 2 is for Architecture courses (B. Arch. /B. Planning.) and is conducted only in the offline mode. The candidates can sit for the 1st Paper, 2nd Paper or even both the papers, depending upon the courses they have applied.

Subjects covered under JEE (Main) 2018

Given below is the list of subjects that are covered in each paper:
Paper 1: Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics
Type of questions: Paper 1 consists of 90 objective type questions with equal weightage to mathematics, chemistry & physics.
Mode of Exam: Both Online and Offline mode
Courses included: B.Tech or B.E

Paper 2:
Part I - Mathematics, Part II - Aptitude Test, Part III - Drawing Test
Type of questions: There are 82 questions to test the aptitude of the candidate.
Mode of Exam: Offline mode
Courses included: B.Arch or B.Planning (at institutions other than IITs)

If the candidate is interested for B.E. or B.Tech courses, one should appear for Paper 1.
If the candidate is interested for B.Arch or B.Planning courses, one should appear for Paper 2.

JEE (Main) 2018 Application Process

The applications process for JEE (Main) has been made online since 2014 and can be done online at their official website www.jeemain.nic.in. The candidates are not required to send any documents to the JEE (Main) Secretariat.

The online application process for JEE (Main) include the following steps:
  • The photographs, signature and left hand thumb impression are to be scanned and send only in JPG format.
  • After filling up the application form, the scanned documents are to be uploaded.
  • The examination fee is to be paid through debit card, credit card or an e-Challan which is generated after the successful submission of the online application form.
  • The students need to download the acknowledgement slip and use it for further reference.

How to make the payment for IIT Mains 2018?

One can do a credit/debit card payment for IIT Mains exam or can even deposit cash at the Syndicate/Canara/ ICICI/ HDFC bank using the e-Challan generated while applying for it online. An additional processing amount of 1.20% of the examination fees is charged if the payment is done through credit or debit cards and the application fee is non-refundable.

The candidate can submit only one application form and hence multiple application forms from the same candidate will get rejected. The name of the candidate in the form should match with the class 12 exam registration. Since the application form is completely online, it is not required to send the hardcopy of the confirmation to the JEE Main office.

The application number which is printed on the confirmation page must be used for any correspondence with the JEE (Main) office. Hence, it is important to keep the application number. The candidate can check the status of the application form on the JEE Main website by using the date of birth and the application number.

JEE (Main) 2018 Eligibility Criteria

The following eligibility criteria should be met by an applicant who wishes to appear for JEE (Main) 2018:
  • Those candidates whose birth date falls on or after 1 October, 1993 (as per secondary education board certificate) are eligible to appear for the exam. However, for the candidates belonging to the SC, ST and PwD groups will be given a relaxation of five years in the date of birth.

  • The class 12 or any other qualifying examination should be cleared by the candidates in 2016 or 2017. Those candidates who will be appearing in their class 12 or other qualifying examination in 2018 are also eligible for JEE (Main) 2018.

  • The candidates should have Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as their main subjects in Class 12 or other equivalent board exam.

  • If the candidates have appeared in class 12 or other qualifying examinations in 2016 and did not pass, but re-appeared again in 2017 and pass the examination, then too he/she is not eligible to appear for JEE (Main) 2018.

  • Candidates should have minimum taken five subjects in class 12 or other qualifying examination in order to be eligible for JEE (Main) 2018.

  • 3 times option are given to the candidate to sit for JEE Main 2018 examination.

  • The diploma holder are also eligible to apply for IIT Mains but are not eligible for admission into NITs, IIITs, etc. They can only sit for the IIT Mains exam for further apply for JEE Advanced.

JEE (Main) 2018 Exam Pattern and Syllabus

JEE (Main) Exam pattern

The JEE Main includes two papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2. The Candidates may either take the 1st Paper, the 2nd Paper or both the papers. It depends upon the course that the candidate has opt to pursue. The duration for both 1st papers and 2nd paper would be of 3 hours each.

Language of question paper:

  • There are two types of language (English or Hindi) that the student can opt for their question paper.

  • Apart from this, the candidate can also opt for the Gujarati language, if he/she has taken Gujarat, Daman & Diu, Dadra & Nagar Haveli as their exam centre.

  • The candidates can also opt for Marathi & Urdu if their exam center is Maharashtra.

  • The candidates need to do their language selection right during filling up the application form.

One needs to appear for the 1st paper if he/she is applying for B.E. or B.Tech courses, whereas for the B.Planning or B.Arch courses, one needs to appear for the 2nd Paper 2 of JEE Main.

About the computer based JEE (Main) exam – 1st Paper

The 1st paper question paper will have objective type questions which will have four options for every question. It carries 4 marks for each correct answer and there are negative marking and hence 1 mark will get deducted for every wrong answer. But, if the candidate leaves a question unanswered, then there is no marks deduction for it.
