IIT - Common Entrance Examination For Design 2018

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) conducts the Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) for admission to various Masters of Design (M.Des.) programmes at the IIT Kanpur, IIT Guwahati, Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing (IISc Bangalore), Interdisciplinary Industrial Design Programme (IIT Delhi), Industrial Design Centre (IIT Bombay) and also Ph.D. programmes in Design at IIT Bombay and IISc Bangalore. Hence the entrance examination is conducted on behalf of the HRD ministry.

However, the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) scores of candidates are also accepted by IISc Bangalore and IIT Kanpur for admission to its various Master of Design programmes. The student’s communication skills, design aptitude, drawing skills and visual perception ability are tested in the examination.

Only the CEED/GATE score does not guarantee the student’s admission to design programmes offered at IISc Bangalore or IITs, but they are also required to sit for the individual tests and interviews conducted by the respective institutes for admission.

CEED 2018 Educational Qualification

The educational qualification for CEED 2018 is that the students must either have completed or expected to complete any one of the following exams by July 2018:
  • 2 year Master's degree in arts, computer applications or science (i.e. after 10 2 3)
  • Government Diploma (G.D.) Art (five-year programme after 10th) with one year of professional experience
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), four-year professional programme after 10 2
  • Professional Diploma in Design (National Institute of Design (NID), Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) or an equivalent 4 year program)
  • Bachelor's degree in interior design, engineering, design, architecture or equivalent (four-year programme after 10 2)
It is to be noted that there is no age limit for candidates to sit for CEED 2018 and may appear as many times as they wish.

CEED 2018 Eligibility Criteria

It is to be noted that only just qualifying in the CEED 2018 examination does not guarantee admission to any programme. Hence, before applying for CEED, it is advisable that the candidates check whether they meet the required eligibility criteria for admission, set by the respective institutes.

Candidates must successfully complete their degree / diploma / post graduate degree programme of 4 years or 3 2 years (after 10 2 level), or must be appearing for the final examination of such a program by July 2018, or must have passed the GD Arts diploma programme (10 5 level) by July 2017. There is no age limit to appear for CEED. Besides, a candidate can appear for CEED anynumber of times.

The eligibility criteria for CEED 2018 may differ from each school.

IISc Bangalore M.Des.

To pursue M.Des. programme at the Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing (CPDM), the candidates should have a degree in architecture, engineering or design. The final admission to M.Des. Programme depends upon a design aptitude test (DAT), which is followed by an interview. The candidates are shortlisted for DAT CEED or GATE score.

IIT Kanpur M.Des.

Candidates having a bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering or design with a good GATE and CEED score are eligible to pursue the two-year M.Des. Program in IIT Kanpur. All students who have a degree in interior design or fine arts are not eligible to apply for M.Des. The shortlisted candidates are further required to sit for a written test and a personal interview.

IIT Bombay M.Des.

The candidates should atleast secure a minimum of 55 % marks (for general candidates) and 50 % marks (for SC/ST Candidates) to apply for The Industrial Design Centre (IDC) in IIT Bombay.

Industrial Design
- Professional Diploma in Design (CEPT, NID or equivalent)
- Bachelor's degree in architecture, design, engineering, interior design or equivalent

Visual Communication, Animation and Interaction Design
- G.D. Art (five-year programme after 10th) with one year of professional experience
- Master's degree in science, arts or computer applications
- Professional Diploma in Design (CEPT, NID or equivalent)
- BFA (four-year professional programme after the 10 2)
- Bachelor's degree in architecture, design, engineering, interior design or equivalent

Mobility and Vehicle Design
- Professional Diploma in Design (CEPT, NID or equivalent)
- Bachelor's degree in architecture, design, engineering, interior design or equivalent
- BFA (four-year professional programme in commercial art or fine art after the 10 2)

If you have a valid CEED score, you may be called for an interview and departmental written test.

IIT Delhi M.Des.

The candidates should atleast secure a minimum of 60% aggregate marks or 6.75 CGPA out of 10 (for general category and OBC Non-creamy Layer candidates) for the Interdisciplinary Master of Industrial Design Programme. For candidates belonging to SC/ST category must secure 55% marks. The candidates having a degree in architecture or engineering are eligible for M.Des. at IIT Delhi. The GATE scores are not considered for these courses.

IIT Guwahati M.Des.

The eligibility criteria for M.Des. Program in IIT Guwahati are:
  1. Minimum 55% marks in qualifying diploma or degree.
  2. A Bachelor's degree of four years in interior design, engineering, design, architecture or equivalent or a four-year professional Diploma in Design from NID or equivalent (five-year diploma from CEPT).
Other than a valid CEED score a creative interactive session and personal interview is required for admission to M.Des. Program in IIT Guwahati.

CEED 2018 Exam Pattern

The CEED 2018 will be held only in English language and the duration will be 3 hrs. The exam will be divided into 2 parts – part A and part B.

Part A contains objective type questions (MCQ, MSQ and NAT) and Part B consists of design and hand drawing type questions to check candidates designing and sketching ability.

Part A will have questions from the following topics:

  • Design aptitude
  • Visual and spatial ability
  • Environmental and social awareness
  • Analytical and logical reasoning
  • Language & creativity
  • Observation and design sensitivity

Part B will include the following topics:

Questions that evaluate the candidates on the basis of their design, drawing and writing skills.

The questions will appear in the computer screen, but the answers have to be given on the physical sheet given by the examiner. The answer sheets will be checked manually after the examination.

There will be 8 questions in Part B. Out of these questions 1-5 will be of 50 marks each and the candidates will have the option to attempt any one of these questions.

The Part A will be held from 10:00 a.m to 11:00 a.m. and Part B will be held from 11:00 a.m to 13:00

It is to be noted that only part B of CEED will be considered for preparing the merit list. Those candidates who have been shortlisted from part A, will be evaluated in part B.

Incase of any technical problem at the test centre, the exam will be conducted again on the same day from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

It is compulsorily that the candidates are required to choose 3 cities in order of their preference at the time of online registration. A request for a change of city will NOT be entertained under any circumstances, after the successful submission of the registration form is submitted.

CEED 2018 Application form

The candidates should only apply online for CEED and upload their signature and photo.
For male candidates, the application fee is Rs. 2000 (for general category) and Rs. 1000 (for females, SC/ST, Physically Disabled (PD).

The candidates can apply for CEED 2018 only through ONLINE mode by using the official website,www.ceed.iitb.ac.in

Registration fee:
  • Rs. 1,100 plus GST for all women candidates
  • Rs. 1,100 plus GST for (SC / ST / PwD) candidates
  • Rs. 2,200 plus GST for all other candidates
Candidates applying after the regular closing date, will have to pay a late fee of Rs. 500 plus GST.
