Common Admission Test (CAT)

Common Admission Test, which is abbreviated and commonly known as CAT is an all India level examination. The same is organized by the Indian Institute of Management. The test is based on the theory of rotating and changes. This is an exam conducted for securing seats and a future at some of the top B-schools in Indian along with management institutes. On the basis of verbal ability, quantitative ability, logical reasoning and data interpretation, candidates are examined and results generated. For the year 2017, the CAT Exam will be held in the month of November.

Eligibility Criteria for CAT 2017

For CAT 2017, one has to start preparing early. But it is vital to know the eligibility criteria before you start the same. All candidates applying for the 2017 examinations must possess a graduation degree. Those who have graduation degrees in any kind of discipline can apply for this exam. However, for CAT 2017 you should have a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent CGPA. Those who come under the reserved categories the percentage is lowered to 45%. If you are in your final year, then you can register for the examination but it should be remembered that you must qualify the same with given eligibility criteria once the results are out. On getting less than 50% marks, you may be disqualified due to this.

Reservation of Seats for CAT 2017

  • Reservation of seats for SC Candidates: 15%
  • Reservation of seats for ST candidates: 7.5%
  • Reservation of seats for OBC: 27%
  • Reservation of seats for the person with disabilities: 3%

It is a percentage criterion that is decided by the Indian govt. and the same can change each year.

Registration process for CAT 2017

The registration process for the CAT 2017 would begin in the month of August 2017. This can be done only via online modes through the official website. The precise dates for registration of CAT 2017 are not announced yet.

For CAT 2017 the process of registration is expected to be the same as previous years. You have to login here and then fill up the form along with providing vital details. Then you have to pick the three cities of your choice, where you can appear for the exam. You can be allowed any one of these cities post the last date of registration.

CAT 2017 Admit Cards

The CAT 2017 admit card is sent to the candidates through the official website. The candidates can download the same from the given dates, which are the official issued date to till exam date. Keep in mind that apart from the downloaded cards, there is not other option to get an admit card.Candidates have to carry this admit card on the date of the examination to the center.

CAT 2017 Application Fee

For all candidates who fall under the general and NC/OBC category there is a registration fee is Rs.1600/. For candidates who come under the SC/ST/Person with Disability application fee is Rs.800/. It should be kept in mind that the entire process of registration and application must be done via the online portal only. You can visit the official website for the entire process.

CAT 2017 Admission Process

The admission for this exam is based on the personal score in CAT 2017. There is a group discussion, written ability test, and personal interview. Once the candidates are shortlisted or ranked, the institutes may also check conduct an academic background check along with status of work, academic performance, and other similar qualifications or details provided by the candidate.

CAT 2017 Exam Pattern

The CAT 2017 paper comprises of a total of 100 questions that are based on -
  • Quantitative ability & data interpretation
  • Logical reasoning
  • Verbal ability
The CAT 2017 examination duration is 180 minutes or 3 hours. The entire examination is conducted via online modes. All of the questions are for 3 marks. There is negative marking of 1 mark for any wrong answer. However, should you chose to leave a question unanswered, there will be no mark will be offered or deducted for the same.

Earlier there was a paper-pencil based test option available for the CAT exams. However, it has now shifted to computer based test.

QA and VRC sections have about 34 questions and the DILR section has 32 questions. The duration of the exam is 180 minutes (3 hours). Not all the questions here are of multiple choice. There are many questions for which you have to feed in direct answers on the screen or type them. There is also a basic on-screen calculator available to help you with the computation process. There is a set time of only 60 minutes for each of the categories. In case some sections are completed earlier, you do not have the option to carry forward that time into another section.

CAT 2017 Result

The CAT 2017 result should be announced during the last week of December 2017. Again the same will be done via official website of organization. To check your result, one has to visit the needed portal and provide their roll number and the name provided in the admit card. On entering the same, you will get your results.

Registration Starts - August 9, 2017
Registration Ends - September 25, 2017
Admit Card - Starts from October 25, 2017
Test Day - November 26, 2017

Mock CAT

To ensure higher rates of success and give you a practice, there are options of mock tests available these days, which is basically Mock CAT. There are many websites offering this service, which helps you to take a shot at a sample test - which is very much like CAT. Doing so helps you get a strong hold of how you would fare in the examinations along with getting an idea about your potential. You can take as many mock CAT tests as you want. Do apply or register on the official site within provided timelines, while you continue to improve your skills through mock tests.

CAT Scores

Different colleges and institutes have different CAT scores. For instance, IIMs prefer having a score of at least 96-97% while other top B-schools could accept 80% scores too. Of course, education and college marks could influence admission here along with the interview tests.
